Our Story

The Reads – Josh and Rebecca, along with their four children Évah, Asher, Joshua and Adi – have felt the call of the Lord on their lives. It’s amazing how the Lord leads! We are simply astounded at how much He cares, guides and loves. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! When He sent His son Jesus to die on the cross and defeat death and break every chain the enemy could wrap around us, the job was done and Christ went back to heaven, BUT, He didn’t stop there! On the day of Pentecost he sent us His Holy Spirit to guide us. God not only died for us but He cares about us, even the little details. The following is the story of those details!

When Josh was 13 he went on a youth group mission trip to Mexico City to build houses in a city known as “Land of the Flying Pigs.” It was a life changing trip for him and though he had accepted Christ as His savior at age 6, he really fell in love with the Lord at this point and started reading the Bible and filling his mind with the Truth of God’s word. Amazingly, two summers later, Rebecca was working at a summer camp (Gitchee Gumee in Eagle River, MI) where a missionary came to speak, at that time, the Lord spoke very clearly to her heart that He wanted her to serve him on the mission field, she too fell in love with the truth and sought after serving the Lord. At age 18, Josh and Rebecca met. Josh tried to show off and ultimately it was his crazy stories and awesome dancing that won over her heart. In college, Rebecca studied fine art and Philosophy while Josh studied Graphic Design and Theology. Although they thought Rebecca’s degree would support them both, God had other plans.

In college, Josh’s roommate was from a family of prayer warriors and through Carters influence, Josh and Rebecca’s hearts were set on fire for the book of Acts. They longed for miracles in their lives. They had come to the realization that there is no greater purpose than serving God and everything belongs to Him and people need to know Him. Unfortunately, as John 10:10 says, the enemy has come to steal, kill and destroy and the enemy was against our zeal.

Rebecca and Josh were married on July 1st, 2001 in a little town just north of St. Paul, Minnesota. The next day they moved to Tacoma, Washington where Josh had been working for Costco Wholesale as a graphic designer. Bills stacked high, as they usually do with newlyweds, and though we knew deep down that we were called to much greater things than paying bills and “surviving.” We then watched the church we were attending fall apart in front of our eyes. We stopped going to church completely. Life became rather meaningless, church friends gone, family members far away. But God is above all things! We found out we were pregnant with Évah at what seemed like a very dark point and the Lord brought some sunshine into our lives, a brilliant laser beam of 1.21 jiggawatts of fearless sunshine! It was a very unexpected miracle that forced us out of our habitually introverted ways. God used her to heal us of depression and self-doubt.

The Lord renewed our faith in the book of Acts (The Early Church) and we began to search for Him again.

Josh remembered reading a book in college that stated: “If God is moving, make sure you go there, let nothing deter you from serving Him.” We heard of a church where the Lord was moving, so we went. It was amazing! There were prayer times after church in which two people would pray and ask the Lord how He had created you and what was blocking you from walking in that “original design”. The team was spot on. We went to a prayer meeting where the Pastor laid out in detail everywhere the Bible pointed to God still speaking today. Then he challenged everyone to bow their heads and ask the Lord to speak to them. With boldness and faith, understanding all of the scripture that had just been laid out, we individually asked the Lord. For Josh, it was like a fire hose of revelation, a backlog of 26 years of not hearing His voice. It was amazing. It is amazing. God still speaks today! It broke all of our modern, cessationistic (Meaning the gifts of the spirit ceased to exist after the last disciple, John the Revelator, died in 80 A.D.) leanings and allowed us to live in a new light! We feel as though this time in our lives was when we actually began to live our lives fully sold out to the Lord.

God is not, and never has been the “angry employer” that our western mindset seems to have us believe!

Realizing that God still speaks and cares about our everyday life was groundbreaking for both of us! He’s not waiting for us to screw up. He’s not dissatisfied with us until we’ve paid our penance! Christ died on the cross for our sins, He paid the ultimate sacrifice for our salvation, how could we possibly do anything to help him or deserve it more?

Along with the Bible, we believe that God’s anointing can rest in the words of songs. A wonderful pastor of ours, Gerry Fry, preached an amazing sermon regarding this very subject. One of Josh’s heros, Leonard Ravenhill, used to always quote a hymn or poem in his sermons, so too, we will do the same. Two verses from two songs that have impacted us immensely. The first is from a recent song by Phil Wickham and the line is: “When we arrive at eternity’s shore, where death is just a memory and tears are no more, we’ll enter in as the wedding bells ring, Your Bride will come together and we’ll sing, You’re Beautiful” – Oh what a glorious day, when the Bride of Christ comes together and gives Him the glory! We want to go and tell everyone of the goodness of God that all would know Him, love Him, seek Him. That the Bride that comes together would be a worthy reward for His suffering.

The second song is The Battle Hymn of the Republic and the line is: “In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me: As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free, While God is marching on.”

So here we are, our hearts are burning. The cry of the Moravians was: “May the Lamb that was slain receive the reward of His suffering!” That is our desire and we will live to make men free!

We have felt the urgency of this hour! The youth of this generation will arise suddenly, they will desire Truth and will turn wholeheartedly toward that which most satisfies. There is a prophetic word (confirmed and heard by multiple trustworthy sources) that has been going around the earth for several years that a wave of 200,000 young people will suddenly arise and go into the mission field.

On December 31st, 2009 I stood in the back of an auditorium that held 22,000+ young people with two amazing sold out for God men. The three of us looked in awe as, what we’ve been praying and fasting to see for the past decade was unfolding right in front of our eyes. There were 22,000+ young people at OneThing Kansas City crying out to the Lord for holiness and righteousness to reign supreme. 4 hours away in St. Louis another 30,000 young people were doing the same thing. I remember thinking, in this room is one tenth of what’s going to arise in the next 18 months, the church is not ready, the mission organizations are not ready, I’m not ready!

It was a Holy moment, one I will never forget. The three of us were compelled by the Holy Spirit and stated that nothing would deter us from seeing His mission fulfilled. On my way home from that event, one of the other men and I were driving together, praying and talking, getting vision for the next season of our lives and strategic steps to take to walk into that season. Suddenly in a dry area, we hit a freak patch of black ice on the freeway and the enemy tried to kill us as we lost control of our vehicle and wrapped it around a pole at 75 mph. Bruised but not defeated, we stepped out of the car and praised God, we were moving in the right direction!

He was on a plane to the mission field 12 days later. I was working with Rebecca on selling our house, all of our possessions, and having our fourth child. The time is now. The Battle is raging!

I loooooove this line. I can rarely sing it because I usually have tears in my eyes… “When we arrive at eternity’s shore, where death is just a memory and tears are no more, we’ll enter in as the wedding bells ring, Your Bride will come together and we’ll sing, You’re Beautiful”

Praying for you to live in God’s purpose for your lives. Be safe. We miss you already!
